Horsley Herald Term 1 Week 6 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,
It is with great pleasure and relief that we announce the easing of the NSW Department of Education's guidelines and to welcome you all back to our school site.
Please take the time to read the advice provided by the Department of Education:

Student Leaders
Last Thursday our Student Leadership Team (SLT) Semester 1, 2021 were presented with their badges at our school assembly.
Congratulations to our 2021 Semester One, School Leadership Team (SLT).
Next Tuesday 16th March, our newly inducted leaders will participate in a half day leadership training session at school as part of their induction into these important and fulfilling leadership roles. This includes our Student Leadership Team (SLT), school captains, vice captains and school ambassadors.
GRIP Leadership - Thursday 23rd March
On Thursday 23rd March, our Captains, Vice Captains and School Ambassadors will be attending an inspiring leadership conference at the Ken Rosewall Arena @Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.
The GRIP Student Leadership Conference is unique in that it concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role as SCHOOL LEADERS. The goal of this conference is for our School Captains, Vice Captains and School Ambassadors to develop a clear vision, a solid understanding and dozens of ideas for their time as a leader. A note will be going home with more information soon. The style, topics, and content of this conference will focus on what our student leaders can do RIGHT NOW.
Congratulations to our Horsley Zone Swimming Representatives
Congratulations to our students who represented our school at the Horsley Zone Swimming Carnival on Tuesday of last week. They all performed very well and were great ambassadors for our school. A special congratulations to Isabella, Mikaylah, Kween- Jay and Elizabeth, who swam extremely well. We are so proud of you. Additionally I would like to extend a huge thank you to the parents and carers who supported their children to successfully participate in this amazing event.
Being on Time and Ready to Learn Everyday Counts
Thank you to all our students who are arriving at school on time, ready to learn and making the most of the learning opportunities at Horsley Park Public School every day. The school day begins at 9:15am. It is important students arrive at school and class on time as this ensures:
- students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
- students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
- students are provided time to greet and connect with their friends before class
- classroom teaching and morning routines are not interrupted
Attendance matters and every day counts towards your child/ren's learning success. Just one day missed per fortnight equals 20 days per year, which is 4 weeks per year and therefore, from Kindergarten to Year 12, that is nearly one and a half years of school. Whilst we encourage daily attendance, on occasion, your child may need to absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
- being sick, or having an infectious disease
- having an unavoidable medical appointment
- being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
- exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide the school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.
NAPLAN Online Assessment
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
Our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 11 May and 21 May 2021.
In preparation for NAPLAN Online, our school will also be participating in practice tests between 22 March and 1 April. The practice test is a trial-run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN Online in May. It is not an assessment of student ability and the tests will not be marked.
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students can use the the public demonstration site to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.

Expression of Interest High School 2022 Forms
Students in Year 6 will receive their Expression of Interest form to attend high school in 2022. Each form is specific to each student as it has their home address written on their form. This address cannot be changed by parents. If you live at a different address than what is written on your child’s form then you need to bring it back to the school office with proof of your current address. If you have any questions about this high school form you can speak with your child’s class teacher, Mrs Benyameen and Mrs White or the front office.
This Expression of Interest form will need to be returned to our school office by Friday 19 March. It is important that these applications be returned by this day so students do not miss the Round 1 (Choice 1) placement.
Selective High School Placement Test
The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday, 11 March 2021 from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm.

School Community Charter
The NSW Department of Education has introduced school_community_charter.pdf for all members of NSW public school communities. It has been developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders.
NSW Public Schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.
The best education happens when students, parents and schools work together. The School Community Charter aligns with the department's Strategic Plan 2018 - 2022.

Horsley Park Public School will be participating in the 2021 Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. This is a FREE challenge open to all students in years 3-6. We strongly encourage all our students to particpate and will require the signed parent consent forms to be returned by 13th March 2021.
Asian Herbs in Space
Horsley Park Public School has been selected to participate in the Asian Herbs in Space Program.
The objectives of the program are to:
- Encourage scientific research between students, schools, universities, and space agencies across the world.
- Promote environmental and microgravity science
- Develop interest and skills in scientific space experiments and methodology
- Inspire further research for the students and academics both nationally and internationally
- Investigate the effect of microgravity on plant growth in comparison to their counterparts on earth.
Last week students from 3/4 Arnurna and K/6 Waratah had the opportunity to engage in a webinar with Professor Gregg Chamitoff, an engineer and former NASA astronaut, about living and working on the International Space Station.
This week we received our seed kits containing the sweet basil seeds from space and some that have not travelled into space. Students are very keen to begin and I hope this project fuels their curiosity and wnhances their scientific investogation skills.
Mrs Leearna Borg
This year we will be continuing to collect bread tags for Aussie bread tags for wheelchairs. We will also be introducing some new collections later in the term to help us ensure that we save as much from landfill as possible in our area. Stay tuned for more details to come!

WELCOME TO K/6 PLATYPUS
Time sure does fly when you're having fun! I can hardly believe we're over half way through Term One already. Students in K/6Platypus very quickly jumped right back into their learning. Here are just a few of the things we have been completing in class:
In Science K/6Platypus has started to learn about Earth and space. We have been investigating the power of the sun. This week we planted our sunflower seeds and we have been making sure they have plenty of sun and water to grow.
In Geography we have been looking at how places are similar and different. We read ‘Are we there yet?’ by Alison Lester and discovered all the wonderful places in Australia.
In Creative Arts we are focusing on music and dance alongside our visual arts. We have begun to learn the Nutbush. We have some really talented dancers in our class and we all have a good giggle during our dance lessons.
Thank you for taking the time to read what's happening in our class!
Have an amazing weekend,
Mrs Leearna Borg
