Horsley Herald Term 1 Week 4 2021
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you to all our parents, carers and community who joined us for our 2021 'Meet the Teacher' Afternoon via zoom. Our teachers thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share their class information. In this newsletter edition you will find class information notes for each class at Horsley Park Public School for those who were unable to join us. As always, our teachers can be contacted throughout the year if you have any concerns about your child and the best way to do this is to contact the office on 96201301, or you can send a message via the Schoolzine App or the school email:
horsleypk-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au
Your message will then be passed onto the teacher who will contact you when they are not on class.
Supervisors Your child's class teacher is your first point of contact. However, there may be times when you need to speak to the Assistant Principals or the Principal.
- For Support Classes: Mrs Lewer and Mrs Kendall
- For Mainstream Classes: Mrs Tanevski
If you are unable to meet with the class teacher or relevant Assistant Principal, please don't hesitate to contact me by calling the school office.
Attendance
Students should be at school unless:
- they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition and the expected timeframe
- they are currently unwell.
Students returning to school after an illness
Parents are reminded to keep children at home if they are unwell. Once fit to return to school, parents are advised to seek medical clearance from their GP. Please also provide a medical certificate for the sick leave taken. Where a Covid test is required, the negative test result must be returned to the office via email prior to the child returning to school.
As always, we encourage our parents and carers to stay connected to the school community via the Schoolzine app and or contact the school via phone to discuss issues or concerns.
Please follow health advice and keep your child/children at home if they are unwell. For the latest health information about the COVID situation, please click on the link below:

Everyday mindfulness
You can use everyday moments to build and practise mindfulness. The more you practise, the more benefit you’ll get.
You can also encourage your child to build mindfulness. In many ways, this is just about getting your child to do what she naturally does. Young children are naturally mindful because every new experience is fresh and exciting for them. Older children and teenagers can learn mindfulness.
Encouraging your child to be in the here and now can give him skills to deal with the stress of study, work and play as he gets older.
There are many ways to help your child build and practise mindfulness. For example:
- Colouring in is a great way to get your child focused on a task.
- Walking through nature with the family can get your child interested in exploring the beauty of nature. Your child could collect and examine autumn leaves, or she could feel the sand beneath her toes during a walk on the beach.
- Taking photographs or drawing something interesting or beautiful – like a sea shell or an insect – encourages your child to look closely at details.
- Looking after a vegetable patch encourages your child to notice how plants grow.
- Listening to music and focusing on the instruments or lyrics is a great way for your child to focus on the present without distraction.

This year we will be continuing to collect bread tags for Aussie bread tags for wheelchairs. We will also be introducing some new collections later in the term to help us ensure that we save as much from landfill as possible in our area. Stay tuned for more details to come!

Safer Internet Day
This week Horsley Park Public School celebrated Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day, an initiative run by the Australian government’s e-safety commissioner, is an event now celebrated in approximately 170 countries worldwide. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about and promote safe, productive and positive online experiences for young people.
This year’s theme is "Together for a better internet". The key messages are: Be safe, Be kind, Ask for help and Make good choices. All students had the opportunity to partcipate in activities which would support students confidence online. Students from 3-6 had the opportunity to participate in a webinar that addressed current challenges faced online and tested their ability to detect fake news.
In addition to providing resources for students, the e-safety commissioner has provided a series of informative resources and online workshops for parents. Feel free to visit the website for more information https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
