Horsley Herald Term 4 Week 6
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Our school is committed to ensuring that how we teach your child is based on what we know makes the biggest difference to their learning. In our school, we have a focus on using the ‘What works best’ eight practices for effective teaching.
These practices include:
- Having high expectations of your child. In our school we do this by…
- Using explicit teaching in the classroom. In our school we do this by…
- Giving effective feedback to your child on their learning. In our school we do this by…
- Using data to inform how we teach your child. In our school we do this by…
- Using regular and effective assessments so we know how your child’s learning is going. In our school we do this by…
- Supporting the wellbeing of your child by looking out for their mental, physical and emotional health. In our school we do this by…
- Managing the classrooms well so they are safe, positive and stimulating environments for learning. In our school we do this by…
- Making sure our teachers collaborate with each other, and experts outside the school, so teaching practice continuously improves. In our school we do this by…
In addition, research shows that greater levels of support and engagement from parents and carers are associated with better student academic and wellbeing outcomes. We also know that students learn more effectively when the home and school environments form complementary and supportive roles for learning. It is for this reason that we are focused on continuing to foster the partnership between our school and parents.
The Department of Education has now released a ‘What works best’ resource for parents and carers, which provides tips for having conversations with your child about their learning. You can visit the department’s Parent Hub where you’ll find other tailored resources for parents and carers, as well as message from the NSW Minister for Education the Hon. Sarah Mitchell MLC https://education.nsw.gov.au/parents-and-carers/learning/what-works-best-2020-update

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are currently coming to the end of a school planning cycle and evaluating the 2018-2020 school plan. We will then be designing a new 4 year School Improvement Plan.
Your feedback and ideas are vital to ensure that the new plan best meets the needs of our whole school community.
Please take 5 minutes to complete the two questions to have your say.

Mindfulness Matters...
Self-care is any deliberate activity that we do to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health. It is a simple concept to think about, but we often overlook caring for ourselves or simply don’t practice self-care enough.
When we practice good self-care, we may notice the positive impacts that it has in our lives. Self-care is linked to improved mood, reduced anxiety and assists us in making good relationships with others.
Self-care is often described as being something that ‘refuels us, rather than takes from us’. It is something important for our wellbeing and should not be seen as being a selfish act because if you do not look after yourself, you won’t be able to look after others properly.

Help needed!
Are you a business owner, bookkeeper, accountant or good with finances?
The P&C needs someone independent to volunteer a couple of hours of their time between now and February to review the transactions of the P&C and confirm the books are in order.

Dear K/6 Daisy families,
Term 4 is almost over and the students in K/6 Daisy have been as
busy as ever continuing their learning. Last week, all students went
to the zoo and participated in a NAIDOC lesson and learnt about
Indigenous cultures. We also had a great time looking at the animals
around the zoo. On Wednesday, all students participated in
SUPERHIRO Day where students dressed up as superheroes and
learnt about bullying and how we can stop it. K/6D, K/6K and K/1O
had fun dancing together at the school disco and it was great to see
the students interacting with each other.
In Literacy lessons, K/6 Daisy have been working on creating some
fairy tales and have enjoyed reading fairy tale books, looking at the
characters and settings in the books and making their own stories
and telling their friends. All students have been engaged and
produced some great work!
Miss Anna and I are looking forward to lots more learning in the next
few weeks with the lovely students in K/6D.
Kind regards,
Miss D and Mrs Orecchio
