Horsley Herald Term 4 Week 5
NAIDOC Week 2020
Our students celebrated NAIDOC Week 2020 (8 - 15 November) with the theme 'Always Was, Always Will Be'. We dedicated time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the First Nation peoples - recognising them as the traditional owners of the land.
Throughout the week all classes had opportunities to participate in daily virtual video streams every morning hosted by Aboriginal Education and communities. 2/3/4A participated in a wonderful introductory lesson to Aboriginal culture and life presented by Kamay Botany Bay Environmental Education centre.
On Thursday 12th November the whole school visited Sydney Zoo. Our students participated in engaging and cultural experiences delivered by Aboriginal guides called 'Bungarribee Dreaming'
All students gained knowledge and understanding of aspects of Aboriginal Culture, heritage and language. Our students participtaed in demonstrations of tools and artefacts, bush tucker examples and traditional Aboriginal activities within the Australia precinct.
Thanks to our Aboriginal Education Team and Mrs Borg who coordinated a whole school excursion to Australia Zoo and to all our staff for facilitating memorable events throughout the week and contributing to our NAIDOC learning as a school community.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the Armistice of World War I was signed in 1918. As such, on Wednesday 11th November at 11am we all observed two minutes of silence to remember. It’s important to learn about Remembrance and to understand the sacrifices these brave soldiers made in war. Thank you to Miss Pavez and our student leaders for leading our whole school through a special assembly.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are currently coming to the end of a school planning cycle and evaluating the 2018-2020 school plan. We will then be designing a new 4 year School Improvement Plan.
Your feedback and ideas are vital to ensure that the new plan best meets the needs of our whole school community.
Please take 5 minutes to complete the two questions to have your say.

Meditation can help us to improve our concentration, mindfulness and compassion.
Concentration helps us to steady and focus our attention so that we can let go of inner distractions that may be unnecessary. The following quote explains the impact that good concentration has on our lives - distraction wastes our energy, concentration restores it.
Mindfulness refines our attention so that we can connect more fully and directly with whatever life brings. Sometimes our perception is changed by bias, habits, desires and fears. Mindfulness helps us to be more aware of what is actually happening so we can see past these things.
Compassion opens our attention and makes us more inclusive and empathetic towards others. Compassion assists us in transforming the way we view ourselves and the world around us.
As we deepen and improve on these three skills, we may find that we feel less stress, more fulfillment, insight, and happiness.
