Horsley Herald Term 3 Week 3
This week we commenced our Peer Support lessons across the school. Our Year 5 and 6 student peer leaders particpated in a fabulous peer facilitators training day on Tuesday 4th August. Their willingness to learn, key leadership skills was very impressive. Our 2020 student peer leaders will be engaging younger students in small groups and work together through a number of structured activities. This year our students will be working on a module called Keeping Friends helping us explore the concept of friendship, build relationships and develop skills in empathy and critical thinking. Peers Support will run every fortnight. On Thursday 6th August we had our first session. Students participated in activities to get to know everyone in their group, agreeing on how they will work together and interact cooperatively with others. They will also begin to think about the meaning of friendship. We encourage you to talk to your children about Peer Support over the next coming weeks as it will help to reinforce the concepts learned in each session. ( 3-7 August) marked the NSW Department of Education’s official celebrations that schools participate in annually to highlight the outstanding work. The theme this year "Learning Together' highlights the importance of schools and families working together and 2020 has certainly illustrated how we do that really well here at Horsley Park PS.
Thought of the week..

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
Ways to keep ourselves and our friends safe!
- We bring in our own belongings and try not to share them with others.
- We use our drink bottles when we want a drink.
- We have wipes to clean our items and surfaces around the classroom.
- We wash our hands more often, especially before fruit break, lunch and recess.
We all know about the importance of keeping our bodies healthy through diet and exercise, but we often forget the importance of looking after our mental health. Mental health looks at our psychological, emotional and social wellbeing, which plays a big part in how we think, feel and act. Positive mental health enables us to have meaningful social connections, gives us strategies to manage daily challenges and helps us make good decisions.
We’ve all heard about resilience, but what exactly is it and why is it important? How can improving our resilience help us overcome challenges and achieve our goals? Visit the link below to find out more

Welcome to K-6 Fern!
Term 3 has taken off to a good start with students donning on their growth mindsets and gearing up for a busy term of learning.
For History this term, the children have started an exciting journey into the past, following in the footsteps of Marco Polo and his travels of the Silk Road. Using technology like Scratch as well as elements of Drama, the children will learn more about this famous merchant explorer who inspired and paved the way for future explorers.
Last Thursday, K-6 Fern celebrated their 100th day of learning with the whole school by taking snapshots of themselves as 100 year- olds, using an app called Face App. As can be seen below, one has aged gracefully while the rest have turned out looking like Papa Smurf!
We are excited to see all the wonderful learning that will take place in our classroom this term.
Thank you for visiting our class and we look forward to seeing you again next time!
Miss Khoo and Ms Ferrari.
